In recent years, relations between Russia and the West have entered a controversial phase, characterized by continued rapprochement and close cooperation but also by disagreements on a number of issues, signaling the emergence of a “new rivalry.”
After entering a period of economic growth and political stability after the millennium, Russia’s foreign policy began to be influenced more by its national interests, with President Vladimir Putin building his program on domestic modernization and pragmatism. Today, Russia’s engagement in globalization is based on a market economy which aims to ensure competitiveness and steady technological innovation.
Russia is a state which occupies a special place in the contemporary international system. Like China Russia does not form part of a group of highly developed states sharing common fundamental values and political institutions, with closely intertwined economic systems and a ramified network of common military and military-political organizations. However, due to its vast economic and military potential, Russia continues to play a major role in ensuring global security. Of particular significance in Russian cooperation with the US in the field of strengthening strategic stability, and in combating terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
