Gulf Security and Regional Watercourse Management: Implications for the UAE

نبذة عن كتاب Gulf Security and Regional Watercourse Management: Implications for the UAE

Some say that future wars will be fought over water, not oil. Others, more optimistically, say that history teachers us the people cooperate over water rather than fight over this life-giving resource. Regarding the management of the Tigris and Euphrates transboundary zone, the issue of a war over water or a war over oil is central and cannot be avoided if leaders of the region wish to build peace and stability. To make this transboundary zone sustainable, the management of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers should be a priority for the countries directly involved- Turkey, Syria and Iraq- but also for the riparian countries of jordan and Saudi Arabia. This study provides information on why countries of the Gulf, and in particular the United Arab Emirates, have a central role to play as mediators and facilitators in the process of building peace and security in the region.
